Bokeo Nature Reserve is a protected area in northwestern Laos, primarily known for its diverse ecosystem and the unique black-cheeked gibbon, which was once thought extinct.
November to February (Cool & Dry Season):
Best time to visit — pleasant temperatures (18–25°C), clear skies, and good trail conditions.
March to May (Hot Season):
Hot and humid, but still accessible. Less crowded.
June to October (Rainy Season):
Lush and green but trails may be muddy, and some areas may be difficult to access. The Gibbon Experience still operates but may adjust schedules.
Nearest town: Huay Xai (on the Laos–Thailand border).
From Thailand (Chiang Khong):
Cross the Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge into Huay Xai.
Easy tuk-tuk ride or walk to the Gibbon Experience office.
From Luang Prabang or Pakbeng:
Take a slow boat on the Mekong River (~2 days).
Or travel by minivan (~10–12 hours from Luang Prabang).
From Huay Xai to the reserve:
